The aqueous layer was basified to pH 12 or above by the addition of 5M sodium hydroxide, extracted with dichloromethane (3 x 750 ml) and the combined extracts were evaporated to dryness in vacuo to afford 5-methoxyisoindoline (8.34 g, 47%) as a brown oil. 1H NMR (DMSO-d6) 7.13 (1 H, d), 6.84 (1H1 d), 6.74 (1H, dd), 4.05 (2H, s), 4.01 (2H, s), 3.73 (3H, s). MS: [M+H]+ 150.

3,3-Dimethyl-1,3-dihydro-indol-2-one (5.5 g, 34 mmol) was dissolved in dimethylformamide (50 mL) and sodium hydride (1.4 g, 38 mmol) was added portionwise and the mixture was stirred 30 minutes then benzyl bromide (4.8 mL, 41 mmol) was added. The crude product was purified via Isco chromatography (Redisep, silica, gradient 0-20percent ethyl acetate in hexane) to afford 7.1 g (83percent) of 1-benzyl-3,3-dimethyl-1,3-dihydro-2H-indol-2-one. HPLC purity 96.4percent at 210-370 nm, 9.5 minutes; Xterra RP18, 3.5u, 150*4.6 mm column, 1.2 mL/min, 85/15-5/95 (Ammon. Form. Buff. Ph=3.5/ACN+MeOH) for 10 minutes, hold 4 minutes. HRMS: calculated for C17H17NO+H+, 252.13829; found (ESI, [M+H]+), 252.142

General procedure: An oven-dried reflux tube equipped with a magnetic stir bar and a Teflon stopcock was charged with aryl halide (1 mmol), oxindole (1 mmol),potassium carbonate (1.1 mmol), catalyst nanoparticles (0.05 mmol)and 1,4-dioxane (2 ml) and heated at 70 C. The mixture was vigorously stirred under these reaction conditions and completion of the reaction was monitored by TLC (EtOAc: n-hexane, 25:75). After completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, the magnetic nanoparticles of the catalyst were collected using a magnet. Ethyl acetate (5 mL) and water (10 mL)were added to the mixture in the next step. The aqueous layer was furtherextracted by ethyl acetate (2*5 mL). The combined organic layerswere washed with saturated brine, dried over CaCl2, filtered, and concentrated to give a residue which was purified by recrystallization from ethanol and water or by column chromatography on silica gelusing EtOAc: n-hexane, 1:7.
