General procedure: Ethyl 7-(2,3-dioxoindolin-1-yl)heptanoate (2a). A solution of 1a (147mg, 1mmoL) in DMF (3mL) was cooled to ?5°C and K2CO3 (165.5mg, 1.2mmoL) was added. Upon completion, the reaction mixture was cooled, acidified with 10percent HCl and extracted with DCM (50mL×2). The extracts were pooled and DCM was evaporated under reduced pressure. Compound 2a was obtained as brown?yellow oil.
